Thank you for joining Umlaut Foundation! With your account, you can support our foster youth through peer-tutoring, get notifications of Umlaut events, and stay up to date on Umlaut policies.
Prepare for your tutoring session by taking a look at our regulations and advice.
The Summer Program Initiative is an opportunity to earn volunteer hours. If you are a volunteer who has attended any educational or extracurricular oriented summer programs, you have two volunteer opportunities.
LECTURE
Create a 10-15 minute introduction about the camp. The work put into the presentation will count as a minimum of two volunteer service hours (additional minutes will be accounted for on an individual assessment if you believe you put in extra work). You will meet up with the Umlaut Board at least twice to practice presenting and receive critique (we will add the time allotted for the practice to your two volunteer hours). If you are interested in presenting, please fill out the Discovery Lecture Form found in the Present tab on your account.
APPLICATION AID
Application help hours are recorded similarly to how Umlaut Foundation tracks hours for tutoring sessions: you will submit the Zoom call minutes through your Umlaut account.
If you are a volunteer interested in attending a lecture, please sign up accordingly through our upcoming weekly newsletter features.
As detailed in our previous newsletters, Umlaut has launched its Summer Program Initiative. The Summer Program Initiative is a chance for foster youth to learn about summer camps from alumni/camp representatives and receive application aid. Everyone is welcome to attend; we are excited to see volunteers, foster youth, caregivers, liaisons, and more at the Discovery Lectures on different camps.
On the first Friday of February, our CCO, Chloe Fields, spoke about her experience at Brown Pre-College Program. Specifically, Summer@Brown, an opportunity for “high school students to replicate the authentic college experience.” Summer@Brown offers many different programs while giving students the freedom to explore the campus and Providence. Chloe took a two-week course on public health and epidemiology. Check out her lecture slides published online, and reach out to her on our Wish List of one-on-one application guidance!

Approaching our first anniversary, Umlaut Foundation has established itself among the Californian foster youth community as a resource for mentorship and materials. In a commitment to our youth, we are looking for students that can help Umlaut Foundation redefine its full potential. Starting February 1st, 2021, Umlaut Foundation is opening our Shadow Applications for students interested in becoming an officer of the 2021-2022 Umlaut Foundation Board of Directors. To provide a seamless transition from one Board to another, Umlaut is looking for driven Californian high school students to serve as shadows for its current Board of Directors.
Based on the results of the application process, each shadow will be assigned a Board member along with their appropriate tasks. Shadows will learn the ins and outs of their board members' responsibilities and practice the skills that come with the position. The goal of the Shadow program is to prep Umlaut for a transitional period before our current Board leaves for college.
The following positions are open for shadow applications: Chief Operations OfficerChief Communications OfficerChief Technical OfficerChief Financial OfficerChief Brand Ambassador
More information about the positions and application instructions are listed on our website. Our current Board is under About Us if you would like to see who you would be working under. Feel free to apply for as many positions as you would like (although you can only be chosen for one position) and submit the assignments through the form (also found on our website).
Applications open FEBRUARY 1ST, and all application material must be submitted by FEBRUARY 15TH AT 11:59 PM PDT.
Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions! We are excited to look over your applications.
Starting September, Umlaut Foundation has decided to implement a new policy to encourage tutoring requests. Every month, each volunteer must request to tutor at least once for every five foster youth requests. For example, if there are thirteen topic requests this month, everyone should have submitted a tutor request at least twice.
If you are a senior attending Amador Valley High School, we have been placed on the pre-approved list of nonprofits for senior service hours. We will be able to track and record your hours, and once you have made the request, we can sign the certification form. If you are not attending Amador Valley High School and would like this benefit extended to your district, please let us know, and we will contact your school board.
